Poet Laureate and Poetry Roadshow
Washington is one signature away from having a Poet Laureate. Passed overwhelmingly in both houses, the bill creating the position awaits the signature of Governor Gregoire to become law. Humanities Washington, the Washington Poets Association, and the Washington State Arts Commission worked together to make this third effort a success.
Poet Elizabeth Austen, leading the 2007 Poetry Roadshow, will be reading and leading workshops in Moses Lake and Aberdeen as part of national poetry month.

Smithsonian Exhibit Opens Across Washington
The Smithsonian exhibit New Harmonies: American Roots Music opens at the Cowlitz County Historical Museum in Kelso. New Harmonies looks at the ongoing cultural process that has made America the birthplace of great music. American music reveals distinct cultural identities and records the histories of peoples reshaping themselves in a new and changing world. See the complete Washington schedule at our New Harmonies page.

Humanities Washington Continues Work with State Migrant Council
With 19 recently trained facilitators busy planning their first Motheread/Fatheread class sessions, Migrant Council staff are excited about bringing literacy services to the families they serve. Now plans are underway for a pilot "My United States" training in June. "My United States" is a curriculum designed to teach American History and Civics to immigrant families, using children's literature as a vehicle for understanding these concepts. The program is structured to prepare migrant and immigrant families for the U.S. Naturalization exam. The June training will be the first "My United States" training coordinated by Humanities Washington, and will be funded by a We the People grant from the NEH.
