Half of Washington State children do not enter kindergarten ready to learn, and Latino children, in particular, face a long list of barriers to success in school. Through programs such as Humanities Washington's Motheread Family Literacy Program, disadvantaged families from across the state gain the opportunity to come together around the collective power of story, building literacy skills, pride in their culture, and a greater understanding of other cultures as a result.

Whatcom READS! - Book Discussion

Join us to discuss “This Body of Death,” one of the books in the Inspector Lynley series (of which “In the Presence of the Enemy” is a part). Whatcom READS! 2012 challenges Whatcom County residents to read and discuss the same book, providing a unique catalyst for developing community through the power of literature. Numerous programs will create opportunities for neighbors to dialogue about such topics as journalistic and political ethics and the writing process. (This is a Humanities Washington-grant funded program.)
