In Memory of Barbara A. Krohn
Barbara Krohn passed away on February 8, 2009 at the age of 83. She was a dedicated supporter of the humanities and Humanities Washington for many years and was the recipient of the 1999 Humanities Washington Award. In nominating her for the award, Gus Norwood of the Fort Vancouver Historical Society said, "We think of her as a woman for all seasons and it has been a long lifetime of seasons during which she has helped to enunciate and spell out the meaning of the humanities in the state of Washington." We will miss you, Barbara.

Barbara's long career in history and publishing included a position with the University of Washington where she served as the first woman Publisher of Student publications and adviser to education students and the University of Washington, as well as teaching positions at UW, Highline College, and Seattle University. As creator and publisher of Landmarks magazine, Barbara provided the voice for historic preservation in Washington and promoted numerous organizations dedicated to the humanities.
Her noteworthy career led her to leadership posts with Washington Trust for Historic Preservation which she helped found, the Association for Women in Communications, Pi Lambda Theta, Fort Vancouver Historical Society of Clark County, Pioneer Association of the State of Washington, Educational Press Association of America, and Washington Commission for the Humanities (now Humanities Washington). The Western Washington Society of Professional Journalists honored Barbara with its Distinguished Service to Journalism Award and College Media Advisors gave her its Distinguished Newspaper Advisors Award.
Barbara was a life-time member of Friends of the Humanities, and also a long-time member of the Washington State Historical Society, Burke Museum, Association of King County Historical Organizations, and the Pacific Northwest Historians Guild. Most recently, she served as the owner of Barbara Krohn and Associates, a communications firm specializing in education, history, and historic preservation.
