2002 Humanities Response Grant Awards
In an effort to promote thoughtful consideration of issues and encourage open dialogue among community residents, Humanities Washington created a special grant round for public humanities projects throughout Washington State which address topics that are particularly relevant in light of the September 11th terrorist attacks. In January 2002 Humanities Washington Board of Trustees awarded the following 10 grants totaling $20,000.

  • Center for World Indigenous Studies, Olympia "New War and Fourth World Nations Public Forum"
    Award: $1,655
    Panel discussion and public forum focusing on indigenous nations, and the need for increased public awareness of the consequences of a "war to defend modernism and against the forces of evil" in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Northwest Communities Education Center, Granger Sept. 11—Implications to the Immigrants of Yakima Valley
    Award: $2,500
    Community forum discussion about September 11th and its implications for Yakima Valley immigrants. Presentation and discussions will be in Spanish, and will be aired on a community radio station.
  • World Affairs Council, Seattle Media Coverage of Terrorism: Is It Fair, Accurate, and Balanced?
    Award: $2,000
    Public forum on the media and its role in promoting understanding of and debate about issues related to September 11th. The forum will include a panel of media professionals, several with on-the-ground experience with the "war on terrorism" in Central and South Asia.
  • Bellevue Art Museum, Bellevue Eleventh: A Community Unites and Remembers Through Art and Conversation
    Award: $2,000
    Public forum examining the social, cultural, and political concerns related to terrorism, prejudice, stereotyping, and civil liberties.
  • Bainbridge Island Arts & Humanities Council, Bainbridge Island "Rethinking Citizenship" Youth/Adult Forum Series
    Award: $1,800
    Three public forums focusing on the meaning of citizenship in the United States as it exists after the events of September 11th.
  • Counterbalance Poetry, Seattle The Languages of Emotional Injury
    Award: $1,655
    Project pairs poets and journalists in readings and in dialogues with audience concerning the nature of emotional injury. Speakers and performers will explore the nature of injury and the resilient character of the human spirit.
  • WA State Holocaust Education Resource Center, Seattle Facing the Challenges of September 11th: Lessons from the Holocaust
    Award: $1,655
    Community forums in Spokane, Walla Walla, Yakima, and Wenatchee, where members of the Center's Speakers Bureau talk about their experiences during and after WWII.
  • Wing Luke Asian Museum, Seattle Community Response Project
    Award: $2,000
    Project aimed at raising public awareness about recent acts of hate and ongoing racism and discrimination since September 11th. Programs will include four race dialogues and community coalition building sessions, a panel discussion, and an addition to the museum's permanent exhibition.
  • City of Lynnwood, Lynnwood Faith Communities: Appreciating the Differences
    Award: $1,655
    Community forum focusing on the acceptance and appreciation of diversity among different faiths. Penelists with extensive backgrounds in Islam, Christianity, and Judaism will speak about ways in which their religions celebrate acceptance and appreciation for others.
  • Spokane Civic Theatre, Inc., Spokane Faith Communities: Appreciating the Differences
    Award: $2,000
    Panel discussion to be held after the showing of Arthur Miller's drama Incident at Vichy, which focuses on eight men suddenly detained in a 1942 Vichy, France police station without explanation.
