American Roots Music: A Sonic Adventure of Continental Proportions In this lecture demonstration specifically designed to complement the New Harmonies: American Roots Music exhibit, Brian Pertl will take the audience on a lively exploration of American Roots Music. Roots Music refers to important early styles and forms of music that nurtured and inspired the growth of more contemporary music genres. The acoustic country blues of Mississippi, for example, helped form the roots of the electric Chicago blues. The roots of music in America today run wide and deep, drawing from our country's rich cultural history. The music of Native American, African American, Anglo Americans, Latino-Americans, and Franco Americans are just a few of the many musical traditions that have shaped our musical culture. Brian will use musical examples of African American field hollers, lead the audience in the call and response, and show how these traditions helped to form the foundations of the modern Blues and Rock music. Brian will also explore less well known traditions ranging from Conjuto and Cajun to Appalachian and Native American music forms. For each of these musical styles, Brian will focus on how the roots music impacts the culture that hears and plays it, and how, in turn, the culture, influences and impacts the growth of the musical tradition.

Banjos, Diddley Bows, and Musical Saws: The Secret Lives of America's Folk Musical Instruments In this companion lecture to the New Harmonies: American Roots Music exhibit, Brian Pertl will explore the musical instruments that help form the backbone of America's Roots Music traditions. Through musical examples, live demonstrations, and audience participation, Brian will explore the fascinating stories behind what at first may seem like simple folk instruments. The banjo, for example, traces its history back to Africa where simple gourd lutes were brought to the new world by slaves. The story of the banjo's complex evolution from African gourd lute to a mainstay of Bluegrass and the Grand Ol' Opry is a fascinating tale of cross-cultural influence and musical migration. Other instruments of America's Roots tradition that Brian will discuss are the Jew's harp, harmonica, accordion, diddley-bow, can flute and musical saw. The audience will go on a journey of discovering American Roots Music through some of the instruments that helped form these unique traditions. Throughout the lecture demonstration, Brian will not only explore the historical importance of these instruments, but also discuss how these instrument and the musical traditions they helped to create influence and impact American society today. Audience: elementary through adult
