The humanities are our collective repository for the best that's been thought and felt within our culture. It's through the humanities that we can bridge the distances between us and interpret--together--the shared experience of being alive. While the humanities tend to be undervalued during tough economic times, it's times like these when we need them the most. Washingtonians are fortunate to have Humanities Washington working to keep the humanities vital throughout our communities.

Key Ingredients
Boys at Food StandWhat exactly are kolaces, spaetzle and pierogie? Most of us eat day in day out without giving a second thought to the wealth of history and culture that shapes our dining habits and taste preferences. Our recipes, menus, ceremonies, and etiquette are directly shaped by our country's rich immigrant experience, the history and innovations of food preparation technology, and the ever-changing availability of key ingredients.

New Harmonies
New Harmonies Guitar Whether called blues, country western, folk, or gospel, the sounds are as sweet as mountain air and as sultry as a summer night in the Mississippi delta. American music, both sacred and secular, reveals distinct cultural identities and records the histories of peoples reshaping themselves in a new and changing world. New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music explores the growth of American music, as rich and eclectic as the country itself.

Between Fences
Chat Over FenceWe live between fences. Whether we need, despise or ignore them, Americans are surrounded by fences. Thousands of types have been invented, millions of miles have been produced, and countless rivals have seized post, rail, panel, and wire to stake their claims. Our past is defined by the cutting point of barbed steel and the staccato rhythm of the white picket. Built of hedge, concrete, wood and metal, the fence skirts our properties and is central to the American landscape.

Yesterday's Tomorrows
Westinghouse RobotExamining the history of the future teaches us about the past. Visions of the future are cultural predictions that tell us something about the times and culture in which they were created. In examining these predictions, we can see how forecasts change as societal needs, fears and conditions change. Yesterday's Tomorrows provides a unique opportunity to reexamine futuristic visions and the society which created them, thus giving us a deeper understanding of American history and culture.
