Join Humanities Washington, the Museum of History & Industry and KCTS 9 for “Legislating Morality: Prohibition’s Historical Lesson,” a special film preview and panel discussion featuring Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s new documentary series, Prohibition. The Aug. 2 event begins at 11:30 a.m. with a special preview of Prohibition, and will be followed by a panel discussion on civility and democracy with filmmakers Burns and Novick, The Seattle Times’ Ryan Blethen, bestselling author Dan Okrent and moderator Eric Liu of the Guiding Lights Network.

Prohibition tells the story of the rise, rule and fall of the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the political and cultural era it encompassed. The film raises questions that are as relevant today as they were 100 years ago — about means and ends, individual rights and responsibilities, the role of government and, finally, who is — and who isn’t — a “real American.”

Come to this event to consider: What are the promises and pitfalls of codifying moral values into the laws of the land? To what extent can the legal enforcement of cultural values help or hinder a diverse society? With a major election on the horizon and a host of issues entwined in varying concepts of morality — from gay marriage, gun control and immigration to healthcare reform and drug legislation — much can be learned from the unique historical lessons of Prohibition in America.

Burns and Novick’s Prohibition is set to air nationwide in October. For more about the series, check out the Prohibition section of PBS.org, or check out the video preview below.
