The Washington State Poet Laureate is available for visits to schools, tribal communities, bookstores, community events, readings, and more. Note that this is the application to apply for an IN-PERSON event. For online events, apply here.

All in-person Washington State Poet Laureate events must be free and open to the public, with the exception of:

Classroom visits
Corrections center visits
Writers' conferences and workshops

Applications to host the Washington State Poet Laureate are reviewed monthly at the beginning of each month.

Please note that due to the volume of event requests, new events are now only being considered for December 2022 and beyond.

A scholar is an individual who is recognized as an expert in one or more humanities disciplines. A scholar’s expertise may result from an advanced academic degree in the humanities or from serving as the keeper of community traditions and knowledge. Examples of scholars include but are not limited to, a tribal elder, an independent expert on American Literature, and a classics professor at a university.

Presentation Planning and Publicity

Please explain in detail how you intend to promote the Poet Laureate's visit to your community, including your anticipated use of traditional media, social media, organizational emails, newsletters or advertising.

Honorarium

The Washington State Poet Laureate receives a very modest stipend for the time they spend presenting to the public and completing a poetry-related project of personal significance. For engagements of 1 hour or less, organizations are encouraged to offer an additional honorarium according to the scale below. For longer or multi-event engagements, please use the 'Other' category to list an honorarium commensurate with the activities you are requesting of the laureate and your organization's capacity to pay.

Verbally acknowledge Humanities Washington and ArtsWA/Washington State Arts Commission and their sponsorship of the Washington State Poet Laureate program at the beginning and end of each program.

Prominently include the Humanities Washington and ArtsWA/Washington State Arts Commission logos on all promotional materials.

Promptly notify the Poet Laureate and Humanities Washington of any scheduling or location changes to the program.
