The Washington State Poet Laureate is available for visits to schools, tribal communities, bookstores, community events, readings, and more. Note that this is the application to apply for an ONLINE event. For in-person events, apply here.

All online Washington State Poet Laureate events must be free and open to the public, with the exception of:

Classroom visits
Corrections center visits
Writers' conferences and workshops

Applications to host the Washington State Poet Laureate are reviewed monthly at the beginning of each month.

Due to the volume of event requests, new events are now only being considered for March 2023 through April 15, 2023.

Rena Priest's term as Washington State Poet Laureate concludes on April 15, 2023. If you would like to request a reading with Ms. Priest after this date, please do not use this form. Instead, send her a message via her website here.

Technology

Due to our small staff, Humanities Washington cannot offer technical support for producing online Poet Laureate events. The host is responsible for all technical set-up and for producing the online event in collaboration with the Poet Laureate. If your organization does not have access to an online platform for hosting events, you can apply to receive one free month of access to a Zoom Pro Account from Humanities Washington. The Zoom Pro Account will include the ability to host meetings with up to 100 attendees. If approved, the host organization will be reimbursed by Humanities Washington after the final evaluations are received. Please indicate whether you would like to request reimbursement for 1 month of access to Zoom Pro.

A scholar is an individual who is recognized as an expert in one or more humanities disciplines. A scholar’s expertise may result from an advanced academic degree in the humanities or from serving as the keeper of community traditions and knowledge. Examples of scholars include but are not limited to, a tribal elder, an independent expert on American Literature, and a classics professor at a university.

Honorarium

The Washington State Poet Laureate receives a modest stipend for the time they spend presenting to the public and completing a poetry-related project of personal significance. For engagements of 1 hour or less, organizations are encouraged to offer an additional honorarium according to the scale below. For longer or multi-event engagements, please use the 'Other' category to list an honorarium commensurate with the activities you are requesting of the laureate and your organization's capacity to pay.

Verbally acknowledge Humanities Washington and ArtsWA/Washington State Arts Commission and their sponsorship of the Washington State Poet Laureate program at the beginning and end of each program.

Prominently include the Humanities Washington and ArtsWA/Washington State Arts Commission logos on all promotional materials.

Promptly notify the Poet Laureate and Humanities Washington of any scheduling or location changes to the program.
